Genius: The Best of Warren Zevon is a compilation album by American musician Warren Zevon, released in 2002. and his dark humour side should be checked out. Mostly during his career he was brilliantly acerbic. which really is a dying man's note to those he is is heartbreaking and the last thing he was able to record. Bizarrely I didn't post 'Keep me in your Heart'. the collection above is his softer side- reflecting my mood when I posted. It became like a who's who of the American music scene inc.Springsteen, Cooder, Keltner, T Burn Burnett, Dwight Yoakam, Joe Walsh, Henley to name a few, all made appearances. The last album 'The Wind' was when he had very publically let the world know he was terminal. The night of his death Dylan did one of his songs as a tribute. Ms Ronstadts, along with Eagles and Fleetwood Mac's Buckingham and Nicks have all appeared on his 70's songs. Zevon had spent a stint as musical director of the Everly brother. Jackson Browne 'discovered' and actually produced his first album. he was hugely respected by many great artists. Will mark you down for next available spot thanks again! Thanks for sharing dillwyn, really enjoyed getting more familiar with Warren Zevon great stuff. I'm sure Randy Newman is a great fan of this guy. Prime Cuts: "Renegade", "Genius", "Splendid Isolation"īottom Line: Great songs by a low-key artist that sings like Gerry Rafferty, Bruce Springsteen, and Jackson Browne all rolled into one. "Renegade" – Instantly captivating, great words and melody. "Hasten Down the Wind – Nice poetic ballad that was the title track of Linda Ronstadt's mid-seventies album way back when. "Genius" – Great music and lyrics, can really see the lyrical wizadry, reminds me of Jackson Browne for some lines.Ġ4. "Nobody’s In Love This Year" – Carries on the theme of the previous song, it seems to me: "don't want to be vulnerable, don't want to get hurt." Really like the hook in the verses, and the soothing sax touches.Ġ3. Agree that the harp/harmonica sounds great.Ġ2. But doesn't beat the listener over the head with the message, which is good. "Splendid Isolation" – Good social commentary on how while being an island unto ourselves is sometimes necessary, it can be carried to too much of an extreme. OK dillwyn, here are my review of the Warren Zevon cuts.Ġ1. This was eleven months before his death, and you can tell the devastating effect the cancer had on him. Great choice.Ĭheck out Warren's final live television performance, on Late Show With David Letterman. I think I have the album this one comes from (Mr. Never heard this “unplugged” version before. It’s one of those songs that you think is more widely known than it actually is, much like “September Gurls” by Big Star. Hasten Down the Wind – One of Warren’s quintessential ballads. Musically, it’s cool and dark, but it just never catches on the same way a lot of his other songs do. Very understated, but also very memorable in its own way. Nobody’s In Love This Year – More lyrical wizardry, but slightly more subtle than usual. Great line about Michael Jackson and Disneyland. Tremendous lyrics, obviously, since Warren was the king of lyrical genius. Splendid Isolation – Love the harp(harmonica). Songs like "Lawyers Guns and Money", "Excitable Boy", "Roland the Thompson Gunner", and "Mutineer" are outright masterpieces.
